The FA Cup appears to have recaptured its magic this season with an intriguing semi-final lineup that pits Manchester City against three clubs hoping to rewrite their own histories in the storied competition.
As the semi-finals approach at Wembley on April 26th & 27th, seven-time winners Manchester City stand alone as the competition’s recent powerhouse. Pep Guardiola’s squad will face Nottingham Forest in what many see as a classic David versus Goliath matchup, with City heavily favoured by bookmakers to reach their third consecutive final.

Nottingham Forest enter their first FA Cup semi-final in decades, having last reached the final in 1991. Their trophy drought in this competition stretches back to 1959, where they beat Luton Town for their second FA Cup win – a remarkable 66-year wait for Forest supporters.

Aston Villa boast a proud FA Cup tradition with seven victories, but their last triumph came in 1957. Since then, they’ve twice reached the final only to fall at the last hurdle. They face Crystal Palace in this years tie, hoping to put an end to the long wait – and for Unai Emery to prove his cup prowess in the Claret & Blue.

Crystal Palace perhaps represent the quintessential underdog story. Despite multiple appearances in the final throughout their history, the Eagles have never lifted the famous trophy. This would be a shock to English football, akin to Newcastle’s recent Carabao Cup win.
For any of these three clubs, a victory over Manchester City and subsequent triumph in the final would represent a storybook ending to their FA Cup campaign. It would mark the end of decades-long waits and provide their supporters with a moment of pure footballing jubilation.
However, Manchester City loom large as potential party poopers. Their recent dominance in English football under Guardiola means they approach every competition as favorites. Yet, the FA Cup’s enduring appeal stems precisely from its capacity to produce upsets and magical moments.
As the semi-finals approach, neutral fans will likely cheer for one of the underdogs to complete their journey and provide the “fairytale ending” that would add another chapter to the FA Cup’s rich tapestry of memorable stories.
